"The songs I write
here came out of my own soul search for reason, and the passion I feel
about embracing the old traditions. The songs are presented in the
form of country blues because I really like the directness and honesty
of the blues, continuing the folk process by writing lyrics that apply
today"

Reviews:
"My
favorite segment of the night was Kevin Johnson’s set of old time Blues from
the era of race records, things like Willie Brown’s 1930 song “M&O
Blues” and what Johnson’s coyly called a “half-ass approximation of
Reverend Gary Davis’ ‘Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning.’” There is
nothing half-ass about the jazzy yet reverent air Johnson breathes into these
songs. He brought Bill Tidwell and his harmonica to the stage to perform Brownie
McGhee’s “Blood Red River,” one of the many the duos performed on
Johnson’s CD [Blues and Bread]." Alex V. Cook

"Hi, this is A.S.R.,
I don't know if you remember, but we met at the Baton Rouge farmers' market back
in August. You were busking
and my buddy and I sat and talked to you and listened to your music for an hour
or so, and you gave us a copy
of your CD. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. We listen to it all
the time, and it has a special
spot in my CD book right next to Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell, and Blind Boy
Fuller. It's really great, you put
a hell of a lot of emotion and energy into the music. Your version of Death
Letter gives me goosebumps, man. ....."
